Develop Relationships With Vendors

This provides a lot of options for people in the cake decorating business, knowing you will not have a problem with cake decorating supplies. Develop relationships with a few of the vendors with some small orders to see how they operate. With a few good suppliers in your little black book there is no worry of being caught without the supplies you need to complete a baking project.

Another big advantage of setting up relationships with a number of vendors is you can establish the quality of their supplies. In a new business we are caught up starting out using the least expensive products from vendors. This is not always the best idea. You could hurt your new business using inferior ingredients when starting out. Making a few small orders from a number of vendors you can determine the quality of their supplies before using them. This will save you from creating a masterpiece and shipping it to a potential long term customer with and inferior products. Knowing the quality will help you establish a standard in quality for your business.

The best idea is to have a second or third choice so you will always be sure to have a supplier no matter what happens in their business or yours. After you have sorted through some of the suppliers and found the ones that deliver the best goods. Now you can start sorting them by price. Some companies may require you to order a minimum amount, and this may be prohibitive as you are starting out in your business.  You will not want to tie up too much capital in inventory.

Don’t just cross off the vendors from your list that have ordering requirements. Just move them to the back burner because as your business grows you will need them in the future. Starting out stick with the vendors that provide smaller orders and provide the quality you want for your business at first. Things like their customer service and how fast they fill your orders will be important to you before you start making bulk orders.

Some vendors provide samples which works great when starting out because you can get a number of samples from different companies to compare to. You will also find there are a number of them that let you do this online saving time and money. Armed with the knowledge of the best vendors with the best supplies will give you the extra boost you need starting out in business.
